PRINCETON, B.C. — The August Lake Wildfire burning near Princeton is being held.

In an update Monday (July 14) evening, the BC Wildfire Service says that based on fuel and weather conditions and resource availability, the fire burning east of Princeton Golf Club is expected to remain within its 14-hectare boundary.

“Crews are reporting Rank 1-2 fire behavior, meaning a smouldering ground fire with a slow rate of spread,” the wildfire service stated in an update online.

Also on Monday, the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen rescinded its evacuation order related to the August Lake Wildfire and revised its evacuation alert.

The amended evacuation alert includes:

  • South of Highway 3
  • West to Amber Hill Road/Darcy Mountain Road adjacent of Sewer Treatment Plant
  • East to Willies Ranch Road
  • Princeton Golf Club and properties on Taylor Mill Drive
  • Properties north of Highway 3 along the Similkameen River
  • South of Princeton Cemetery Road
  • East of Copper Mountain Road
  • West of Willie Ranch Road

The regional district notes that residents will be given as much advance notice as possible before an evacuation is ordered, although they may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.

As of Monday, 40 firefighters and three helicopters were responding to the August Lake wildfire. It’s suspected to be human-caused.

Further south, the largest wildfire in the Kamloops Fire Centre is now measured at 2,600 hectares in size.

The wildfire service says crews got an updated track of the Placer Creek wildfire Monday morning due to better visibility.

The large wildfire burning east of Eastgate is suspected to be human-caused. However, no evacuation orders or alerts have been issued in response.
