Izman Creek fire near Lytton being held at 243 hectares

LYTTON, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service says the Izman Creek fire near Lytton is being held at 242.8 hectares in size, thanks to the “excellent progress” of crews as well as favourable weather.

The change in status means that while the fire is still burning, it is likely to remain within its current perimeter, based on fuel and weather conditions.

“Crews have made excellent progress, working safely and thoroughly around the entire perimeter,” the BC Wildfire Service said, in an update Tuesday (July 8) evening.

“Personnel will remain on-site to continue mop-up and patrol efforts in the coming days to ensure the area remains secure.”

The BC Wildfire Service was expecting fire behaviour on the Izman Creek fire to pickup because of a warming and drying trend. That didn’t appear to materialize despite some increased winds brought about by a cold front Tuesday (July 8).

“Fire activity has remained minimal both today and over the past four days, and the fire has not grown since Friday, July 4,” the BC Wildfire Service added.

“The front is forecast to pass early Wednesday morning, bringing a slight chance of a few light, isolated showers. Temperatures tomorrow are expected to drop by 3 to 5 degrees, further decreasing fire behaviour.”

The fire was accidentally sparked by an RCMP vehicle on Canada Day (July 1). It was classified as a wildfire of note on July 2, but that designation will be dropped on Wednesday.

Another status update is expected to come Wednesday morning, after which the BC Wildfire Service said it will update its public dashboard “if there is a significant change in response requirements.”

Evacuation orders and alerts issued by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) and the Lytton First Nation exactly one week ago remain in place for now.
