Grassfire near Peterson Creek Park under control

KAMLOOPS — The grassfire that broke out in the area of Peterson Creek Park Thursday (June 26) evening is now under control.

That’s according to an update from the City of Kamloops Friday (June 27) morning.

“While the visible signs of fire have disappeared, crews remain on site to manage hot spots and will continue to remain on scene over the next few days,” the City said in a statement.

“The fire has officially been marked as ‘under control’ from BC Wildfire Service.”

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the fire that sparked in the hills near Glenfair Drive and the Xget’tem Trail is estimated to be around three hectares in size. It is also believed to be human caused, though no other details are available yet.

Witnesses on the ground told CFJC Today that the fire was sparked around 5:40 p.m. Thursday evening.

“No structures or critical infrastructure are threatened and we’re going to manage this fire overnight to make sure that all the hotspots are actioned,” KFR Deputy Chief Ryan Cail told CFJC Today in a Thursday evening update.
