Major sewer main project to take over Fourth Avenue in downtown Kamloops this summer

KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops says work to upgrade the sewer main along Fourth Avenue downtown is set to get underway early next month.

Project Delivery Manager Adam Gordon says this work, which will be done by BA Dawson Blacktop Ltd., is part of the city’s plan to increase its sewage capacity downtown.

He told CFJC Today that the project – which builds off last summer’s major project along Lansdowne Street – will eventually include similar sewer main work on First, Second, Fifth, and Sixth Avenues.

“The first of these that we’re taking on is Fourth Avenue due to the major City Gardens development that is further up the road as well as the Kamloops Centre for the Arts which is set to begin construction soon,” Gordon said.

Crews are scheduled to begin working on Fourth Avenue at Lansdowne Street on July 7, and Gordon says they will work block by block and make their way to Battle Street by early November.

“It’s again a deep trench and so we will be starting further down towards Lansdowne and working block by block,” Gordon added. “Unlike Lansdowne however, we should be able to keep traffic flowing more freely during the course of the work.”

There will be some temporary changes to traffic flow and the availability of parking downtown while work is underway. There will be impacts to transit and buses that run along that section of Fourth Avenue will be detoured via Sixth Avenue.

More detailed traffic impacts will be released prior to the start of each phase of the project.

“We’re also going to be in close discussions with residents and businesses along that stretch to limit impacts as much as we can,” Gordon added.

He also said dust control measures will also be in place, as heavy vibratory equipment will be used. There will also be heavy truck traffic and noise disruptions as work takes place along Fourth Avenue.

“In terms of the when [for work on First, Second, Fifth, and Sixth Avenues], that is still beholden to some of our master planning that we need to do,” Gordon added. “I expect that in the coming handful of years that we’ll be taking on those projects one at a time.”
