SD73 Parent Advisory Council plans weekend rally to bolster call for increased education funding
KAMLOOPS — The School District 73 (SD73) Parent Advisory Council will hold a rally as part of a call to the B.C. government to raise funding for public education in Kamloops and area ahead the upcoming academic year.
On Saturday (May 10) from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., parents of SD73 students and other partners with the school district will rally outside the Thompson-Nicola Regional Library in downtown Kamloops to collect signatures, stories and student submissions.
The rally comes as the SD73 Board of Education approved to cut 70 full time equivalent positions to address a $5.8-million deficit in the 2025-26 budget due to increased costs. Of the 70 cuts, more than 40 are CUPE positions. The union representing support staff in SD73 says library assistants, high school science assistants and school maintenance and janitorial staff will be affected.
“Cuts to programs, support staff, librarians, counsellors, and more will deeply impact our most vulnerable children, put pressure on an education workforce that is already burnt out, and takes decades to rebuild from,” Bonnie McBride, SD73 District Parent Advisory Council chair, states in a news release issued Tuesday (May 6) night.
