KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP will launch a program Dec. 1 that will see Mounties act as de facto bouncers at local businesses.

Detachment spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says the Inadmissible Patron Program has been in the works for six months.

It will feature participating businesses teaming up with RCMP to ensure those not welcome in their establishments are made to leave immediately.

Shelkie says the potential customers targeted by the program will most likely have criminal histories.

“First of all, if we go in and they are wearing gang colours or support gear or insignias, then we know that they are an inadmissible patron,” said Shelkie. “Some people we may recognize as having dealt with them and we know what their background is. But with everybody, we’ll be doing on site the appropriate checks to determine if that person qualifies as an inadmissible patron.”

Those who refuse to leave may be arrested and charged with trespassing, said Shelkie.

While the program is aimed at licensed establishments like bars and restaurants, it is open to any type of business.

“In other communities, some fitness facilities have joined on. Any type of business where they feel that there are some patrons who could be a hindrance to the safety of their business, they are more than welcome to sign on with us,” said Shelkie.

Nearly 20 companies have already signed up, and Shelkie says the program remains available to others.

Participating businesses will receive a sign to display near their entrances, advising patrons of the program’s details.

While the program is launching in time for the holiday season, Shelkie says it will be operated permanently on a year-round basis.

“It’s kind of coincidental. It’s fortunate, though, that it’s starting at this time. It’s been in the works now for six months here. We’ve been talking to businesses and getting down the appropriate steps that we take.”
