The family of Raymond Hugh McLachlan is brokenhearted to announce his passing after struggling with a lengthy illness. He fought so long and hard to stay with us. We lost a truly remarkable man.
Ray was born in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, and raised on a rural farm in Herschel. From a young age, Ray worked side by side with his father, Jim, being taught how to raise chickens and turkeys, plant and harvest the fields, milk cows, and breed and tend to the horses. By the late ’60s, Ray started chuckwagon and chariot racing, driving his old school bus with his horses in tow to participate in any rodeo he could find! He won many, many trophies and ribbons over the years, including two championship belt buckles, which he proudly wore until his passing.
In the early ’80s, Ray left farm life and moved to Kamloops. There, he became a businessman, becoming one of the new owners of the Bar K Pub. He made many new friends during his time there, including meeting his future wife. In 1988, his life path took him on a new journey—Ray married the love of his life, Georgina, and also became an instant father to her children. The two settled in Barriere, B.C., where Ray’s dream of having his own farm came true. He immediately began raising chickens, turkeys, ducks, and exotic birds. Tending to his “flock” of animals and children was his happy place. He was never shy of hard work; even on his darkest days, Ray was up at dawn, grabbing the kids and taking them out to do chores. Ray and Georgina also purchased a small café called the Hi-Cookie, where they worked for eight years. Good homemade meals and baking were made for people for miles around. He was so proud!
In 1996, Raymond welcomed his daughter, Reagina Raechel, with a full heart. Although born with special needs, he raised her with exceptional love and patience. Ray and Georgina traveled to children’s hospitals all over Canada in order to give Reagina the best start in life.
Due to his declining health, Ray sold his beloved farm and moved back to Kamloops. There, he was reunited with many old and new friends. Although Ray and Georgina had been separated for some time, she stepped forward to help Ray in any way she could. When the time came, she opened up her home to him, where she and Reagina stood by him, providing comfort, love, and palliative care until the end. He was loved.
Ray is predeceased by his parents, James and Cissy Mclachlan. He is survived by his siblings: Donald (Yvonne), Diane (Mickey), and Susan (Ron). His children: Shaunna (Carl), Brandon, and Reagina. His grandchildren: Brooke, Anthony, Dakota, Cloe, and Riley, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was very much loved and admired. We will never forget him.
