LILLOOET, B.C. — Residents in the Lillooet area will be without emergency room coverage for 49 hours this week.

Interior Health said the ER at the Lillooet Hospital and Health Centre will be closed as of 7:00 a.m. Monday (March 10). The facility is only expected to reopen at 8:00 a.m. this Wednesday.

Residents in the area in need of emergency care are being told to head to Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. It’s a 171 km drive that takes about two hours to complete, assuming the roads are good.

“All other inpatient services will continue as normal at Lillooet Hospital,” Interior Health said, in its boilerplate statement.

This is the second ER closure of the year in Lillooet. It’s also the eighth ER closure in an Interior Health facility in the month of March. The majority of closures so far this year – nine, eight of which have come since Feb. 23 – have been in Merritt.

As has been the case during past emergency room closures, Interior Health says people who need life-saving emergency care should call 9-1-1.

People who aren’t sure if they need to head to the emergency room are being told to contact HealthLink BC at 8-1-1.
