BCWS, Upper Nicola Band plan controlled burns in Quilchena area
UPPER NICOLA, B.C. — The mild temperatures and melting snow have the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) planning fuel management burns in the B.C. Interior.
The latest missive from BCWS describes a planned 30-hectare burn in conjunction with the Upper Nicola Band, beginning as early as next Monday (Mar. 3). The project will take place in multiple areas of Quilchena IR #1, about 25 kilometres northeast of Merritt.
BCWS says smoke could be seen from other Upper Nicola communities, Nicola Lake and those driving on Highway 5A.
While the exact timing will depend on weather and site conditions, the wildfire service says the project could last through to the end of April.
