KAMLOOPS — For the first time, PacificSport Interior along with the City of Kamloops and local RCMP have partnered to bring a free event to Kamloops — ‘Pathways Through Play; Connecting to your Community.’ The event will take place on March 13 in the Kia Lounge at Sandman Centre.

The event, which includes a presentation from the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit (CFSEU) of the RCMP — which targets gang violence in B.C. — will highlight the warning signs of gang influence on youth and showcase positive outcomes when kids are involved in the community through sports and the arts.

“We will hear from Cpl. Gilmore, from a specialized gang unit who will discuss those tactics that they use (to influence youth) and educate us,” said Carolynn Boomer, Executive Director of PacificSport Interior. “But also, what can we do in our community to connect these youth with positive influences such as sport? See it, try it. Maybe you don’t like this sport, maybe you like this sport, but not giving up. Just really embracing whatever you may have a bright light in trying.”

The event is targeted at children between 11 and 14 years old and their parents.

Along with presentations from the RCMP, paralympic gold medalist Greg Stewart will be on hand. While never involved with gangs, Stewart believes his story will resonate with the attendees.

“We don’t have to experience certain things in our life to experience vulnerability. We just have to be in a place of discomfort and all of us feel that on a regular basis. But it’s what we do in that discomfort, it’s what we do in that vulnerable time that really will impact us the most,” said Stewart.
