KAMLOOPS — A concert featuring a mixture of Indigenous and non-Indigenous performers in Kamloops was recognized for excellence in community service.

The Margit Sky Project’s “Music for the People – A Cultural Experience” received a Communitas Award in the Skills Based Community Services category for its commitment and dedication to uniting Indigenous and non-Indigenous voices, fostering healing and inspiring hope.

In a news release issued Tuesday (Feb. 18), Music for the People states the Communitas Awards is an international effort to recognize exceptional businesses, organizations and individuals who selflessly give their resources for the benefit of their communities.

Music for the People was established in 2022 with a vision to have Indigenous and non-Indigenous performers come together in a shared celebration of culture, music and storytelling. The latest concert saw nearly 1,400 residents from Kamloops and area attend the Tk’emlups Powwow Arbour. The concert’s cofounder, Rod “Little Sky” Bandura, passed away in January 2024.

“Rod would be so happy and proud of receiving such a prestigious award that embodies the vision he had to make this world a better place through music,” Margit Bandura, Music for the People co-founder and singer-rhythm guitarist with the Margit Sky Project states. “I wish he was here to accept it with me, but I must continue telling his story through this event.”

Donations received by Music for the People goes towards the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

Music for the People adds that plans for the 2025 edition of the concert are underway, and it will feature performances from the Sage Hills Singers, Drummers and Dancers, the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, local musicians and the Margit Sky Project.
