KAMLOOPS — Kamloops and Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc students in Grades 1 to 6 with a passion for fire safety can now apply to become the community’s Honorary Junior Fire Chiefs for the next year.

The initiative organized by Kamloops Fire Rescue (KFR) will select two young students at random for a one-year term to gain hands-on experience with firefighters and help spread awareness about fire safety.

“Teaching children about fire safety helps build good habits that can last a lifetime,” Josh Cowen, KFR’s life safety educator said. “The Junior Fire Chief program gives students a chance to learn directly from firefighters, share what they learn with their friends and families, and play an active role in keeping their community safe. We hope the experience inspires them to become fire safety champions at home and at school.”

The City of Kamloops said the Junior Fire Chief program is meant to make learning about fire safety fun for children while giving them an opportunity to be involved in the community.

“The selected students will enjoy a pizza party with their classmates, ride in fire trucks with firefighters and Sparky the Dog, visit local fire stations, participate in public safety campaigns, and help develop fire safety content for other children. They may also be invited to participate in public celebrations and community events,” the city stated.

Students need to meet the following qualifications to apply:

  • Have a passion for protecting their community and promoting fire safety.
  • Live in Kamloops or Tḱemlúps te Secwépemc.
  • Be enrolled in Grades 1 to 6
  • Have support from a parent or guardian, including a signed photo and video release.

Applications can be found online, and will be open until Nov. 16, with the new Junior Fire Chiefs selected on Nov. 17.
