Doerkson backs budget, hopes for big cut of forestry funds
VICTORIA — British Columbia’s incoming Conservative premier Lorne Doerkson is all-in on the budget tabled by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government.
Doerkson says the document is an “encouraging and ambitious statement” about Canada’s economic future and recognizes B.C.’s “tremendous opportunity” in transportation and resources.
The federal budget includes several measures that promise to support Canada’s forest industry as it weathers U.S. tariffs, though it’s not clear how much of the $6.5 billion it earmarks will flow to B.C.
Doerkson says he hopes the majority of the funding will flow to his province, where forestry is a “key generator” for the provincial economy.
