Construction on Little Fort Firehall garage set to begin

KAMLOOPS — The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) said work will soon be underway on a new $240,000 two-bay garage at the Little Fort Firehall.

The TNRD said construction is set to begin next Monday (Nov. 9) and continue through the winter, as weather allows.

Residents in the area will likely not be impacted, aside from the inconveniences that come with an active construction site.

“The new two-bay garage will be built at the northwest corner of the Little Fort Firehall and Little Fort Community Hall property, located at 152 Highway 24,” said the TNRD.

“No closures are anticipated for Latremouille Park or the Community Hall, but people using these spaces can expect an increase of traffic and noise in the parking lot area while work takes place.”

Work associated with the building included relocating the fire department’s water storage tank, excavation into the adjacent hillside and trenching from the main building for electrical servicing.

Officials said the finished building will be put to use storing a fire engine and bush truck.

“Currently, these vehicles are stored at the Blackpool Firehall during winter months and at private property during non-winter months,” said the TNRD.

“Having a permanent storage space on the Little Fort Firehall property will support more efficient response times when these vehicles are deployed. The new building will be approximately 1,400 square feet in size.”

The TNRD said $175,000 of the estimated $240,000 project budget is grant funded, with the remaining $65,000 coming from the Regional District’s reserve funds.
