KAMLOOPS — The TRU WolfPack women’s soccer team hosted a playoff match at Hillside Stadium for the first time in four years, where home field advantage served them well.

The team earned a 3-1 victory over the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 31), securing their spot in the Canada West Final Four.

Isabelle Lachance opened the shoring with the first and only goal of the game for the Huskies in the ninth minute.

Just two minutes later, Sara Kuusimaki tied up the game with the WolfPack’s first goal of the match.

Nearing the 13th minute of play, TRU veteran Esi Lufo pulled the WolfPack ahead with her first goal of the match.

By the end of the first half of play, the WolfPack’s aggressive play gave them a 10-4 shot advantage, and were up 2-1 on the scoresheet.

“I thought it was game of two halves,” said WolfPack head coach Mark Pennington. “For the first half we dominated and probably felt a little unfortunate to go into the break only leading 2-1, they cleared some balls off the goal line and we had an unusual blip at the back, but [goal keeper Floor Ursem] responded really well and made a really big save just before the half that could have been a turning point in the game.”

In the 81st minute of play, Lufo earned a free kick for her second goal of the game, earning her team the 3-1 victory.

“The composure and quality Lufo showed for that little over the head bicycle kick is top class,” said Pennnington. “Then to stick the free-kick in the top corner – I’ll give her credit, she was out here all week practicing free kicks and it’s great when that hard work pays off.”

The win means the WolfPack will head to Vancouver next weekend to take on their BC Division rival UVIC Vikes on Friday (Nov. 6).
