Wildfire risk reduction burn to spark near 70 Mile House

100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) will support the 100 Mile House Natural Resource District to create a wildfire fuel break near Pressy Lake.

BCWS officials said work on the 10.7-hectare interface fuel break is expected to start as early as mid November and could continue until March 31, 2027.

The target site is next to the Pressy Lake Recreation Site, just south of North Bonaparte Road — which is about 10 kilometres southeast of Green Lake and 25 kilometres northeast of 70 Mile House.

Crews will selectively remove dead overstory trees, with larger logs to be left on site as coarse woody debris or processed and left for firewood.

The BCWS said the job will be done with hand and mechanical methods, with machinery kept out from areas next to the lake shore and locations with cultural or archaeological significance.

“Understory trees that contribute to ladder fuels will be selectively thinned, and lower branches on retained trees will be pruned to reduce the potential for fire to spread into the forest canopy,” said the BCWS.

“Surface fuels, including slash and woody debris, will be treated through mulching and pile burning to reduce overall fuel loading.”

The Wildfire Service said the burn is meant to reduce fuel accumulation and protect wildlife habitat, recreation values and environmental features while creating a more open, resilient forest ecosystem in the area.
