KAMLOOPS — The City of Kamloops is launching a new public engagement event for residents to learn about what the municipal government is working on and connect with city staff.

The drop-in event, dubbed Have Your Say Day, outlines existing and upcoming projects, programs, and services, where attendees will be able to learn, ask questions and provide input.

City officials said each event will focus on one project, with the first happening on Saturday, Nov. 14, being the Residential Parking Program related to neighbourhood streets in Valleyview, downtown, and the Tranquille Market Corridor.

“Have Your Say Day is about creating a convenient and welcoming opportunity for residents to engage with the city,” Kristen Rodrigue, the city’s communications and strategic partnership director said. “By bringing multiple projects and services together in one place, we’re hopeful residents feel it is a more convenient way to learn about city initiatives, talk directly with staff, and share their local knowledge and lived experience to contribute to city decisions.”

Presentations will take place in the On Side Restoration Lounge at Sandman Centre at 12:00 p.m. for downtown, 1:00 p.m. for the North Shore, and 2:00 p.m. for Valleyview, with city staff available to talk to attendees.

City officials said the first event will also have many other topics up for discussion, including Reimagine Downtown!, Accessibility Plan update, Westsyde Pool and Fitness Centre, Budget 2027, Build Kamloops, capital projects, drought response, solid waste and recycling, sustainability, recruitment, and other municipal services and programs.

The city is also giving residents an extra incentive to attend.

“Attendees can skate for free by collecting at least two stamps in an event passport. One person or one family can use each passport. A small amount of skate equipment will be available to borrow, said a statement from the city.

“Children aged 13 and under must bring and wear a helmet, and children aged seven and under must be accompanied on the ice by an adult wearing skates.”

The city said Have Your Say Day was developed to improve public awareness for projects and create more opportunities for public participation.

“The event was developed in response to residents sharing that multiple engagement opportunities occur throughout the year with schedules that do not align, and they may not know where to start or how projects connect to one another,” the city stated. “By bringing projects together in a single, centralized event, the city aims to increase participation, improve awareness, and help reduce engagement fatigue.”

The city also notes that it will be the first of an ongoing series, which is expected to be held three times per year.
