WolfPack in dangerous form ahead of quarter-final match in Kamloops

Oct 26, 2026 | 6:30 PM

KAMLOOPS – Head coach Mark Pennington remembers the moment well, his TRU WolfPack women’s soccer team securing its first U Sports post-season victory against the Victoria Vikes in penalty kicks on Oct. 22, 2022, at Hillside Stadium.

“I see the [it] on a regular basis because it’s actually in our recruiting video,” said Pennington, head coach of the WolfPack women’s soccer team. “I’ve included it in there and we talk about what a magical moment and great night it was for our fans to run on the field and have that celebration. That’s something that’s lived with me since then. If we can replicate something like that on the weekend, I mean, it’s why we do this, right?”

The WolfPack posted a record of eight wins, two losses and four ties this season, good for its best regular season finish in program history, placing second in the Pacific Division behind the undefeated UBC Thunderbirds.

TRU is scheduled to host the Saskatchewan Huskies (8-3-3) on Saturday [Oct. 31], the Canada West quarter-final tilt slated for noon on Halloween at Hillside Stadium.

“We just look forward to the challenge and I think if we don’t let the occasion get to us and we can come out flying, we’ve got a really, really good shot,” Pennington said.

There is every reason to believe the WolfPack will come out flying, the club having registered seven goals this past weekend in two victories at Hillside Stadium – 4-3 over the UBC Okanagan Heat of Kelowna on Friday and 3-2 over the Trinity Western Spartans of Langley on Saturday.

Quality accompanied offensive quantity. Rookie Allison Hill of Kamloops unleashed a belter from distance in the win over the Heat.

“I was just surprised, to be honest,” said Hill, who has three goals and three assists in 14 games this season. “It ended up being a really good strike, but I honestly wasn’t going to shoot it. But I heard Macyn [Jolly] from behind me say, ‘Shoot!’ I just hit it and it went in.”

Makenna Ford opened the scoring on Saturday with a beezer of her own, the ball on and off her right foot in an instant after a peach of a pass from Albanian danger woman Esi Lufo.

Lufo, among the most prolific players in WolfPack history, suffered a dislocated elbow earlier this season, but appears to be healthy and determined following her return to the lineup.

“Her absence in the last few games, we persevered,” Ford said. “But having her back out there, it was so nice to have someone who could just get the ball right to my feet, right when I needed it.”

Ford returned the favour less than two minutes after opening the scoring, setting up Lufo for her second goal of the campaign.

In the other quarter-final tilts this weekend, Calgary (12-2) will host Victoria (4-3-7) on Friday, Mount Royal (11-2-1) will host Trinity (8-4-2) on Saturday in Calgary and UBC (13-0-1) will host MacEwan (8-4-2) of Edmonton on Saturday in Vancouver.

The remaining top-seeded Prairie Division club will host the Final Four on Nov. 6 and Nov. 7. If each of the Prairie Division teams fall in their quarter-final matches, the remaining top-seeded Pacific Division club will host the Final Four.

UBC is scheduled to host the U Sports Championship from Nov. 12 to Nov. 15 in Vancouver.

The match on Saturday at Hillside will mark TRU’s second home playoff game and first conference quarter-final on home turf. The 2-1 triumph over the Vikes four years ago was a Canada West post-season play-in game.

TRU knocked off Mount Royal 4-3 in penalty kicks on Oct. 29, 2022, to advance to the Canada West Final Four, in which it lost twice and placed fourth.

The WolfPack women’s soccer team has neither won a conference medal nor advanced to the national championship tournament.
