Westsyde Pool operating hours to focus on evenings, weekends: city report

KAMLOOPS — Plans are in the works to reshuffle operating hours at the Westsyde Pool and Fitness Centre.

In a report to Kamloops council for Tuesday’s (Oct. 27) regular meeting, the city’s community and culture department says staff will review operating hours to reallocate underutilized time to periods with higher demand, such as evenings and weekends.

“Staff will monitor facility usage to support these efforts. Staff will also align operating hours so the fitness centre and pool open at the same time,” Sherri Holmes, the city’s sport, recreation and wellness manager, writes.

Nearly 1,600 residents participated in a survey over the summer as the city re-evaluated the Westsyde Pool. According to the survey, demand was at its highest during weekday evenings (51.9 per cent), Saturday afternoons (44.9 per cent) and Sunday afternoons (41.1 per cent).

“Expanded weekend hours was the most requested schedule-related option among the 721 respondents who provided feedback on operating schedules,” the report states. “Respondents expressed strong interest in fitness classes, private swimming lessons, specialized lessons and private parties.”

The report and survey are part of a “comprehensive operational review” of the Westsyde Pool after Kamloops council and staff looked to improve the facility’s cost recovery to lower the city’s tax rate.

A report in February stated the Westsyde Pool had a 27 per cent cost recovery rate for 2025, well below the city’s desired target of 50 per cent for recreational facilities.

Moving forward, the city says staff has developed a phased plan for improving access and expanding programming at the Westsyde Pool, although a timeline was not provided in the report.

The city says staff will monitor participation levels, revenue, staffing impacts and feedback to evaluate the effectiveness of the future operating hour changes.
