Kamloops SPCA among branches to take in 46 farm animals

KAMLOOPS — The BC SPCA has welcomed 46 more animals from a farm that could no longer care for them, with the Kamloops branch among those taking some of them in.

SPCA officials said 22 cats and kittens, 16 Call ducks, six Muscovy ducks, one sheep and one goat have been transferred to several of their locations for further care, including Kamloops, Kelowna, South Okanagan/Similkameen and Surrey.

“With no place to take their animals, their guardian made the compassionate decision to reach out for help,” said the BC SPCA.

“The BC SPCA has three barns located throughout the province (Kelowna, Nanaimo and Surrey) dedicated to offering specialized care to farm animals.”

The SPCA gives all of the animals in its care a health assessment, but the process is more involved for farm animals, which includes full personal protective equipment, infectious disease testing and rigorous health monitoring.

“There’s a lot of work happening behind the scenes that goes into caring for any animal, and farm animals are no exception,” said Kahlee Demers, animal triage and flow senior manager.

“They require specialized staff knowledge, different types of enrichment and care, and stringent health protocols.”

According to the SPCA, farm animals stay in their care for an average of 29 days, longer than the 10-to-14-day average for cats and dogs.

Officials said one reason is finding adequate care for farm animals can be a challenge.

“We’re hoping to bring attention to these critters so they can find their forever homes quickly. They’ve already been through a big change in the past week since they arrived in our care, and we’d love to see them in a home setting as soon as they’re able to,” said Demers.

The SPCA said the animals arrived in relatively good shape and will be put up for adoption once they complete health testing and medically cleared.
