Pile burning project near Sun Peaks aims to reduce wildfire risk
SUN PEAKS, B.C. — A pile burning project is set to begin near Sun Peaks this week.
The BC Wildfire Service says it’s supporting the mountain resort municipality in burning nearly 20 piles about four kilometres northwest of Sun Peaks. While the exact timing of the pile burning is weather and site condition dependent, the wildfire service says it could begin as early as Wednesday (Oct. 21).
In a news release issued Tuesday, the wildfire service says goals of the burn project include wildfire risk reduction, restoring forest health and removing forest fuels.
Smoke may be visible from Sun Peaks and the surrounding area.
