Tranquille sewer main project slightly behind schedule, but paving work to wrap up this year

KAMLOOPS —Work is still progressing on a major sewer replacement project along Tranquille Road in Brocklehurst, but the city says crews are can see the finish line in the distance.

Work on this third and final phase of the project began last year, and crews are currently focused on the intersection of Tranquille Road and Southill Street, where the last bit of the sanitary trunk main pipeline is being installed.

Matt Kachel, the city’s infrastructure delivery manager, called it the “last big, hard part of the project.” He said the pipe is laid, crews will shift their focus to the clean-up phase as this year’s construction season draws to a close.

“We are a little bit behind schedule,” Kachel told CFJC. “This was meant to be done a couple weeks ago but being an old corridor, there were some surprises so we had to re-tool our approach a bit. We want to make sure we do a good and we don’t have to come back, so we’re taking the time to do it right.”

“We appreciate everyone’s patience. This will be done soon and we will pave this year, and the detours will be removed.”

Kachel says the city expects to have the entire project wrapped by the spring next year, though he noted work over the winter and early spring will be weather dependent. There will still be some intermittent disruptions next year so crews can complete beautification and other surface work, but Kachel noted it won’t be as significant as the last two years.

“This was a hard project and then the detours that it created through the neighbourhoods was a big issue because people were speeding,” Kachel added. “We actually had to spend a lot of time on that trying to manage how everything moved around this site, but I think everybody has been really understanding and great about it.”

“We’re happy to get out of the way and I’m sure everyone will be happy for us to be out of here.”
