KAMLOOPS — Tobiano residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of a referendum to determine the fate of fire protection services in the area.

345 residents in the Tobiano Fire Protection Service Area voted on the referendum, with 321 saying “yes” and only 23 “no” votes.

The resort community west of Kamloops has fire protection services, but it does not have a dedicated fire hall.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) said a purpose-built fire hall is needed to continue those services for residents and businesses.

Prior to the referendum, the TNRD had an agreement in principle with Diverse Properties in which the real estate developer will donate a parcel of land at the corner of Colebrook Road to accommodate the new facility.

“This location is central in Tobiano and within eight kilometres of all properties in the service area,” said the TNRD.

“The Tobiano Fire Department continues to operate out of the golf course maintenance building, which is a temporary arrangement that is not suitable for permanent use. A purpose-built Tobiano fire hall would have all relevant spaces of a rural fire hall, including proper room for turnout gear, fire trucks, apparatus, as well as changerooms, washrooms and a chief’s office.”

With the referendum passing, the TNRD will seek to borrow up to $2.5 million for a new fire hall, which equate to a residential tax increase of $41 per $100,000 of assessed value.

The latest referendum came more than one year after a majority of residents in Tobiano and Cherry Creek voted against a new fire protection service that would have covered both communities west of Kamloops.
