VANCOUVER — The TRU WolfPack soccer teams had mixed results against the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver on Friday (Oct. 17), with the women’s team earning a tie game to break a years-long winning streak.

The women put forward a complete team effort to do what no other team could in 44 regular season games against the Thunderbirds and battled to a 1-1 tie.

The hard-fought match saw forward Joss Olcen score her first goal for the WolfPack in the second half of play.

The draw breaks a winning streak that the Thunderbirds held onto since October 6, 2023.

Head coach Mark Pennington said the team played a strong game.

“Sophie Flannery came in for her first minutes as a WolfPack player and I thought she did really well, she won fight after fight in the bottom of the midfield and showed that she can really have an impact not only at this level but against the number one team in the country. Joss Olcen worked her socks off. Everybody stepped up and we were really happy with the energy in the second half,” said Pennington.

“I think the biggest thing we take away from this game is some belief that we can compete with the top teams in the country as we go into a playoff push here. Hopefully they can continue and use this as fuel moving forward.”

Meanwhile, the men’s team put up a strong effort against the Thunderbirds, but ultimately suffered a 2-0 shutout loss.

“Playing against the top team in the country you have to stay organized and balanced and I thought we were really solid defensively today. Right at the end in the last 20 minutes we started to really put the pressure on them but unfortunately a call didn’t go our way and they scored late,” said head coach John Antulov.

“I was really proud with how the guys played today, UBC is the top team in the country so for us to be able to battle them is what we needed, especially going into tomorrow.”

The men’s and women’s Wolfpack are in Langley on Saturday (Oct. 17) to kick off against the Trinity Western Spartans.
