‘It’s right there’: TRU WolfPack on the road chasing playoff spot

KAMLOOPS — Good results this weekend could see the TRU WolfPack men’s soccer team through to the Canada West post-season for the first time since 2024.

“It’s something we’ve been chasing for the past few years,” said WolfPack defender Domenico Comita, the captain from Kamloops. “The guys are really pushing. We want it. Fortunately, destiny is in our own hands. We’ve had a good start to the season. It’s something we need to keep working toward.”

TRU has six wins and five losses this season, good for third in Pacific Division standings. The top four teams in the division will qualify for the post-season.

The Trinity Western Spartans (4-6-2) are fifth in the division and well within reach of cracking the top four, with two games remaining against TRU, including one on Saturday (Oct. 17)  in Langley.

“Those are very important games,” Comita said. “They’re in a situation where if they win both games, they might be able to overtake that fourth spot, but we are just looking at it game by game and trying to come up to the plate the best we can.”

Victoria (5-4-2) is fourth, Fraser Valley (7-3-4) is second and UBC (11-0-2) is first in division standings.

TRU will square off against undefeated UBC on Friday, with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Vancouver.

WolfPack defender Lewis Crompton is hoping to return from injury this weekend.

“It’s so nice,” said Crompton, who is from Melbourne, Australia. “I’ve been watching from the sidelines for almost three weeks. It’s no fun, so I’m happy to be almost back. Me, Liam [Freathy] and Domenico have played together a lot, so there’s a comfortability there which I hope can help us get results against teams like UBC, which is a huge game this weekend.”

There is also not-so-good news on the TRU-team-health front, with midfielder Alesandro Comita nursing an upper-body injury.

“It’s always tough seeing a teammate – seeing a brother – go down injured,” Domenico Comita said. “You never like to see it, but it makes us stronger as a team. Guys need to step up and guys have stepped up.”

TRU will wrap the season with two home matches next weekend, playing host to winless UBC Okanagan (0-11) of Kelowna on Oct. 23 before taking on the Spartans on Oct. 24.

The match against the Spartans on the penultimate day of the regular season could be do-or-die for the Pack and entertaining for fans at Hillside Stadium.

TRU would rather avoid that high drama by pinching a result or two this weekend.

“Since we started the season so good, it’s something everyone’s been thinking about – thinking about nationals, thinking about playoffs,” Crompton said. “Now, it’s just time to come back down, take it one game at a time and think about performing this next game. It’s right there.”
