KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops building sector continued to run up the score in September amid a record-setting year.

New numbers released by the City of Kamloops Building Inspection Division show $80.6 million in activity was recorded over 102 permits for September 2026, more than five times greater than the $14.8 million recorded over 80 permits from the same month last year.

An institutional permit worth $37.4 million carried the Kamloops building sector in September. According to the city’s property information search portal, the permit is for the footing of the Kamloops Centre for the Arts project currently under construction.

Elsewhere, eight commercial permits issued in September were worth nearly $23.5 million. On the residential side, 30 permits were worth nearly $18.7 million. That includes a four storey, 27-unit rental housing building at 969 St. Paul St. in downtown Kamloops.

Year-to-date, nearly $509 million in activity has been recorded over 770 permits in Kamloops. Nearly $297 million was recorded over 782 permits as of September 2025. The city’s second busiest year on record was 2022 with $415 million in permit activity.

However, the city’s chief building official noted in August that the record set in 2026 doesn’t reflect the current state of the construction industry in Kamloops.

Elsewhere, permits for 47 new housing units were issued in September 2026, down from 72 during the same month last year. Year-to-date, Kamloops’ new housing unit total of 558 in 2026 is down from 645 as of September 2025.
