D’Amore of Kamloops leads B.C. Hockey Conference in goal scoring

KAMLOOPS — Luca D’Amore leads the Junior A Tier 1 B.C. Hockey Conference in goal scoring, the 19-year-old forward from Kamloops with 12 goals in eight games.

“It’s shocking, almost,” said D’Amore’s teammate Alex Schaub, a Kamloops Storm defenceman from Okotoks, Alta. “I didn’t know he could be that much better after last year. He came in and he’s just way better.”

D’Amore was productive last season, with 26 goals and 57 points in 44 games for the Storm, who toiled in the Junior A Tier 2 Kootenay International Junior Hockey League.

But his club, which had championship aspirations, was swept by the Williams Lake Mustangs in Round 2 of the post-season – and that defeat did not sit well.

“After our loss last year, it definitely stung, so I think it was a common theme between me and all the returning players – we don’t want to feel that again,” D’Amore said.

The Storm made the jump this season to the Junior A Tier 1 B.C. Hockey Conference and D’Amore – who took over the team captaincy  – put the new league on notice on opening night.

He tallied four goals in a 7-1 win over visiting Columbia Valley on Sept. 18.

“I mean, obviously, it was a great feeling, but that was just a great game from everybody,” said D’Amore, who took part in Kamloops Blazers’ training camp in 2025 and 2026. “I thought we had a really good start to our season.”

D’Amore had another four-goal night on Sept. 25, accomplishing the feat in a 4-0 triumph over visiting Beaver Valley. He was named the BCHC’s top forward for September.

“In the off-season, he works so hard,” Storm assistant coach Jassi Sangha said of D’Amore, who has scored in six of eight games this season. “We play ball hockey against him in the summer, too, so he’s always running, always training. We knew he’d have a pretty good start to the season.”

The Storm have five wins, two losses and one shootout loss this season. They’re tied for second in the Interior Division with the Merritt Centennials (5-2-1-0).

Kamloops is scheduled to host the Williams Lake Mustangs (4-2-0-0) on Wednesday (Oct. 14), a 7:00 p.m. start at the McArthur Island Sport and Event Centre.

It was the Mustangs who jettisoned the Storm from the playoffs last season.

“Teams will start to adjust more to him and focus on him more,” Sangha said. “We’ve got to get him out of those matchups and maybe add some more things to his game, so when everyone is pressing on him, he has options to look at.”
