KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers showed no signs of a turkey coma at Sandman Centre Monday (Oct. 12), edging the visiting Portland Winterhawks 3-2 in a shootout.

Portland’s Reed Brown lit the lamp first, cleaning up a rebound after a goal-mouth scramble late in the first period to give the Winterhawks the lead. Portland outshot Kamloops 10-5 in the first, with goaltender Kaeden Tate standing tall in the Blazers’ goal.

Kamloops came out with plenty of jump in the second period. They were rewarded when Andrew Thomson potted a power play goal at 10:47, drawing the game even. The goal was Thomson’s team-leading fifth of the season – all with the man advantage.

Import forward Vit Zahejsky gave Kamloops the lead early in the third period with his third goal of the campaign, a whirling laser of a shot over Portland goaltender Ondřej Štěbeták’s right shoulder and into the top corner.

Portland drew even with just 21 seconds left in the third period. With Štěbeták on the bench for an extra attacker, Brown took a pass from Jordan Duguay and found the back of the net.

Neither team could end the game in overtime, necessitating a shootout. Tate stopped Sam Spehar, Brown and Jake Gustafson in the shootout, and Zahejsky beat Štěbeták for the only goal, giving Kamloops the 3-2 victory.

Tate made 36 saves for Kamloops to earn the game’s first star. Štěbeták finished with 35 saves for Portland.

The Blazers (4-3-0-1) have won two games in a row and sit third in the BC Division. With the point from the shootout loss, Portland (3-2-0-1) rises to second in the U.S. Division.

Kamloops’ next game is Friday (Oct. 16) in Seattle. Their next home game is set for Wednesday, Oct. 21 against the Tri-City Americans.
