Mustard Seed Thanksgiving meals set table for connection

KAMLOOPS — More than 50 Mustard Seed guests will enjoy Thanksgiving meals this weekend at several of the organization’s shelters.

“Our guests can connect with our staff, with one another and that can often lead to a transformation in life, which is just beautiful,” said Pia Church, fund development coordinator for Mustard Seed.

Mustard Seed guest Andrew Cancela is nearly four years clean and sober. He said holidays are often especially lonely for those struggling with addiction who are not in contact with their families.

“For the guys in early recovery, it’s very comforting to have stuff that feels like home,” Cancela said. “When it comes to these holidays with the meals, it’s just a very good opportunity for guys to mesh together, get closer and feel like a family when you’re not able to be with your family.”

The meals are available to those who use Mustard Seed services. Guests are served by staff in dining areas.

CFJC Today dropped by the Mustard Seed West End Shelter on Friday morning (Oct. 9), when a donation arrived from St. Ann’s Academy – a truckload of goods that was hauled into the kitchen.

“We have amazing community partners in the form of volunteers, we have local churches that partner with us, donations,” Church said. “All of these different ways that our community supports us is crucial to being able to offer things to our clients like Thanksgiving meals.”

The Mustard Seed is looking for volunteers. Those wishing to donate can do so online at theseed.ca/thanksgiving.

“When you’re in addiction, it’s isolation,” Cancela said. “The opposite of that is connection, and it’s very important to have that connection between us all.”
