Workers at A New Tomorrow treatment facility join United Steelworkers union

Oct 8, 2026 | 9:50 AM

KAMLOOPS — Workers at a recovery-focused treatment centre for adults and young people in Kamloops have unionized.

Employees at A New Tomorrow in Kamloops are now members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 1-417, according to a news release issued Thursday (Oct. 8).

USW says its new members are seeking greater consistency and stability, improved staffing and workplace supports and better wages and benefits. The union says heavy workloads and workplace stress have taken a significant toll on the members.

“These workers dedicate themselves to caring for others, often under challenging and stressful conditions. They deserve the same care and support in their own workplace,” Scott Lunny, USW director for Western Canada says. “Taking care of others shouldn’t mean sacrificing your own health and well-being.”

Workers at A New Tomorrow include addiction workers, cleaners, cooks, counsellors, nurses and social workers. The treatment centre in Brocklehurst opened in 2022.

USW says it will work with the members at A New Tomorrow to prepare negotiations for a first collective agreement. While USW Local 1-417 based out of Kamloops is known for its members working in industries such as sawmilling and wood products, the union says it has representation in health care and support services, adding that it recently welcomed workers at Wiidookodaadiwin Services in Kamloops.
