Penalty trouble sets Blazers back in 3-1 loss to Wheat Kings
KAMLOOPS — A slew-footing double minor penalty proved costly for the Kamloops Blazers in a 3-1 loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings at home Wednesday (Oct. 7) night.
After a scoreless first period, the Wheat Kings scored two power play goals in 1:11 after 16-year-old Blazers forward Brady Ondrus was served the double minor penalty. The Wheat Kings added a third goal off a redirected shot late in the second period to take a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers showed some life in the third period, peppering Wheat Kings goaltender Ryley Budd with 15 shots on goal in the final frame.
Andrew Thomson scored his team-leading fourth goal of the young Western Hockey League (WHL) season by pouncing on a rebound on the power play with 3:20 remaining. However, the Wheat Kings would hang on for the 3-1 win.
