KAMLOOPS — Nelly Dever is leading the Pivot Kamloops slate into the October 17 election, looking to ascend into the mayor’s chair.

Dever has experience around the horseshoe in Kamloops, serving one term as councilor. As the public seeks out change in this year’s election she’s hoping that past experience – while not be associated with the current council – can be a boost.

“Every single neighbourhood – it doesn’t matter if it’s Rayleigh or Dallas or Pineview or Dufferin – the sentiments are echoed the exact same all the way through every neighbourhood. It’s fiscal discipline, they’ve lost their voice, they want transparency and they want more engagement in the community,” Dever told CFJC News. “It’s been humbling and it’s been a great experience.”

Running a slate in municipal politics is not a new concept, but has rarely been attempted in Kamloops. Dever’s Pivot Kamloops slate has brought together a wide range of political views, with both former Green and Conservative candidates in the fold.

“We do get the questions, ‘Are you a slate? Are you a voting block?'” explained Dever. “And we bring it back to, there are four different financial agents, four different campaign managers. It’s a big-tent idea. Over a year ago, I was approached by union (reps), Conservative, Green party, with the same concern of decorum, civility and fiscal discipline. And so we explain that when you go the voting polls, when you vote for one, you don’t automatically receive the other three. And you have to vote one, two, three or four, and ideally obviously we would like all four to be elected. That is how we describe it.”
