Contractor Proctor enters Kamloops Centre MLA race as independent

KAMLOOPS — Thaelo Proctor is the first independent to run in one of the two Kamloops ridings since 2020, when Brandon Russell received less than one per cent of the vote in Kamloops-North-Thompson.

Proctor is looking to defy the odds on October 24, running unaffiliated in Kamloops Centre, in what will be a five-way race to Victoria. He didn’t see the existing parties representing the working class.

“(I want to) put pressure on politicians to do more service in their communities and talk to real people, hear what they have to say, not just be around for the big events that are being documented,” said Proctor. “Not just be around in the private rooms when they are being lobbied, but talking to real working-class people and hearing what they have to say, doing their best to find consensus and represent them.”

Proctor, a contractor, also volunteers with Rotary in Kamloops and believes politicians need to speak directly to the people impacted by the bills they vote on in Victoria.

“Individually, I would say I’m progressive in my ideas. I believe high wealth individuals and highly wealthy, high revenue corporations should by paying their fair share,” said Proctor. “And where I differ from other progressives is I feel the consensus around Kamloops is the government is not going to do the job they are committed to do. There are consistent broken promises and ineffective legislation.”
