KAMLOOPS — The Canadian Cancer Society’s (CSS) CIBC Run for the Cure in Kamloops raised $73,753 on Sunday (Oct. 4), with $18 million raised nationwide.

The event drew over 65,000 participants across Canada in more than 50 communities, including Kamloops, to support those impacted by breast cancer.

“[Sunday’s] participation shows how much can happen when a community chooses to act together,” says Eve Jedrzejewska, Executive Vice President, Business Enablement and Governance, CIBC.

“We are so grateful to everyone who contributed their time, energy and generosity to the Run. CIBC is honoured to celebrate 30 years of partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society and to continue supporting a movement that brings meaningful progress to people affected by breast cancer while advancing the possibility of a future beyond this disease.”

The CSS said the money raised is invested in research, clinical trials, advocacy and support programs for those impacted by breast cancer.

“Scientists funded through the CIBC Run for the Cure have helped drive some of the most significant breast cancer research discoveries of our time: advancing modern therapies, identifying breast cancer causing genes, improving detection and monitoring, and developing strategies to stop the disease before it starts,” said a statement from CSS.

In the 35 years since its inception, the CSS said the Run for the Cure has raised $558 million for the cause

The CSS said breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women, highlighting the need for ongoing investment.
