Kamloops experiences near normal September as El Nino weather pattern builds

KAMLOOPS — Following its second-driest summer on record, the Kamloops area experienced near-normal conditions through the month of September.

According to Environment Canada, a mean temperature of 16.0 C and 16.7 millimetres of precipitation were recorded at Kamloops Airport in September 2026. The mean temperature is on par with what is typically recorded in Kamloops during September, while the precipitation is lower than the seasonal amount of 22 millimetres.

However, warmer and drier conditions are expected to rebound and persist in the Kamloops area through the fall as the El Nino winter pattern builds.

Prior to Thanksgiving weekend, Environment Canada forecasts that Kamloops will experience sunny conditions and reach daytime high temperatures in the 20s. But Matt Albers, a senior meteorologist at Environment Canada, doesn’t expect those conditions to last.

“October is probably going to be a few degrees above normal, but you’re going to get these blips of cooler temperatures as systems kind of move its way through from the Pacific,” Albers says. “Generally speaking, it should be fairly nice for most of October and at least in the next two weeks.”

As the El Nino pattern gets stronger as the days progress, Albers says conditions in the Kamloops area should be near normal through November and December. He adds that the stretch of winter from January to March is where there’s a larger chance of drier conditions and above seasonal temperatures.

As of its latest data on Oct. 1, the BC Drought Information Portal shows the South Thompson basin experiencing Drought Level 3 conditions with the Lower and North Thompson basins sitting at Drought Level 2. The portal also notes high water scarcity levels for the Coldwater, Lower Nicola and Upper Nicola Rivers.
