SALMON ARM, B.C. β€” Work on replacing a 56-year-old pump station is set to begin this October, with the anticipated cost to be over $3 million under budget.

The City of Salmon Arm said the Zone 2 Pump Station, which services northeast and southeast Salmon Arm and Canoe, has reached the end of its useful life and needs to be replaced.

On Monday, city council awarded a $4,526,108.20 contract to Chandos Construction Ltd., which will construct the new facility near the Canoe Beach parking lot.

According to the city, the project is estimated to cost $6,315,000, which is $3,019,800 less than the overall approved budget of $9,334,800.

The pump was built in 1970, and shares a wall with the Zone 1 pump, which was constructed in 1995.

City officials said the new station will be moved from the original location.

β€œThe existing Zone 2 pump station has exceeded its useful life, and the proposed upgrade will be relocated to the south side of the rail corridor (above the flood elevation), be increased to the operating capacity for future demand, and be constructed with modern equipment,” said city council documents.

The City said construction is set to begin in October 2026 and continue until June 2027.
