KAMLOOPS — The Kamloops Blazers opened their home-and-home weekend on a high note with a 5-2 win over the Kelowna Rockets at Prospera Place on Friday (Oct. 2).

Cooper Moore opened up the scoring for the Blazers just 2:35 into the first period. Just five minutes later, Vit Zahejsky made it 2-0 for the visitors.

Kelowna, which swept Kamloops in the first round of last season’s playoffs, got on the scoreboard courtesy Owen Folstrom’s power play marker at 16:18.

Blazers’ forward Andrew Thomson restored the two goal lead with a power play goal of his own at the 4:32 mark, with assists from Mateo Ferreira and Ty Bonkowski.

Dawson Gerwing brought Kelowna within one goal again when he struck on a power play at the 18:30 mark, but the Blazers responded just 17 seconds later through rookie 16-year-old forward Brady Ondrus – his first career WHL goal.

The Blazers led 4-2 after 40 minutes, and Bonkowski netted the lone goal in the third period to secure the Blazers’ 5-2 win.

Kamloops netminder Kaeden Tate put up a strong defensive showing, as he blocked 39 of 41 shots on net. Rockets’ goaltender Harrison Boettiger stopped 21 of the 26 shots in a losing effort.

The Blazers will be on home ice Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. to host the Rockets at the Sandman Centre.
