Cariboo drivers urged to adjust driving to changing road conditions

100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — With the approach of winter, Williams Lake, Quesnel and 100 Mile House BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) members are reminding Cariboo residents to prepare for changing road conditions.

BCHP said drivers can expect to see more enforcement along highways through October as part of the Drive Relative to Conditions campaign.

“Police officers are paying particular attention to motorists driving at speeds that are unsafe for the road, traffic, visibility or weather conditions,” said the BCHP.

“Posted speed limits are intended for ideal conditions, and drivers need to slow down when faced with rain, frost, snow, ice or reduced visibility.”

Drivers are encouraged to take some time to ensure their vehicles are winter ready. This includes:

  • Installing winter tires and ensuring they are in good condition. Winter tires or chains are required on most B.C. routes beginning October 1.
  • Ensuring headlights and taillights are working, clean and visible, especially when driving in dark or poor weather conditions.
  • Checking windshield wipers, brakes and tires, and fixing any other vehicle defects that could impact safe driving.
  • Clearing snow, ice and frost from the vehicle before travelling to ensure the driver has a clear view, and the vehicle is visible to others.
  • Checking up-to-date highway and weather conditions before driving, particularly when travelling longer distances.

Drivers in the Cariboo should be especially cautious, as the BCHP said conditions can change quickly.

“As temperatures approach freezing, ice can develop unexpectedly and a roadway that appears clear may still be slippery,” said the BCHP.

“BCHP will also be working with road-safety partners, including Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement, during the campaign to identify unsafe driving behaviour and vehicle defects.”
