Tk’emlúps RCMP investigating Sunday’s apparent white nationalist gathering; Carney condemns demonstration

According to police, the group dispersed once officers arrived and spoke with them, but their demonstration continued throughout Kamloops.

“The posting of a banner bearing the words ‘got bones,’ combined with the use of masks to conceal their identities while making such public statements is a cowardly attempt to avoid accountability for actions and messages that are clearly intended to intimidate, provoke fear and division,” said a written statement from Pelley.

In a social media post, masked members of Second Sons Canada can be seen standing shoulder to shoulder, with several of them carrying flags.

The Canadian Anti-Hate Network calls the group a white nationalist “Active Club.”

According to the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, Second Sons “encourages its supporters to get firearms and carries out fitness training, practices mixed martial arts, and conducts military drills under the supervision of veterans. They see violence as necessary and inevitable to defend their movement, attack their opposition, and ethnically cleanse Canada.”

In a statement issued on Sunday afternoon, Kúkwpi7 Rosanne Casimir said the gathering is “deeply concerning” just three days before National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

RCMP officials said they are looking into the demonstration.

“The RCMP is taking this matter seriously and will continue to engage the group as part of our response and current ongoing investigation,” said a statement from Pelley.

“The RCMP’s position on this type of messaging is clear and such and we will continue to ensure that all offences are thoroughly investigated to support potential prosecution.”

Prime Minister Carney condemns Tk’emlúps gathering as ‘abhorrent’

Prime Minister Mark Carney responded to the events of Sunday on social media, calling the participants “cowardly” and saying their actions were “abhorrent”.

“The cowardly act that took place at Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc yesterday, is abhorrent. It has no place in this country,” said Carney in a post early Monday afternoon. “My thoughts are with everyone who are shaken and hurt by this disgusting display of hate.”
