Years-long prescribed burn project resumes north of Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) and the Thompson Rivers Natural Resource District are working together on a years-long prescribed burn project north of Kamloops.

The BCWS said the wildfire risk reduction and ecosystem restoration project this fall will cover about four hectares in the O’Connor Lake area, about 23 kilometres north of Kamloops.

Crews will use targeted mechanical harvesting, fuel management treatments and prescribed fire to reduce trees encroaching on grasslands and open forested areas to reintroduce more grasses.

The project began in the spring and will continue over the next decade or so, with work going on when conditions allow.
