Meikle of Kamloops closing in on three CJFL receiving records

“I was pretty surprised,” Meikle said. “I found out about that just before the Kamloops game. It got brought to my attention. As cool as records are, I’m not really looking to be the guy that sets all the records. I just want that ring at the end of the season.”

Meikle burned his former team, the Kamloops Broncos, for four receptions, 80 yards receiving and four touchdown passes in a 72-0 blowout victory on Sept. 5 at Hillside Stadium.

“Our team was definitely trying to feed me the ball a bit more and I could see the Broncos were trying to guard a bit differently,” said Meikle, who scored on four consecutive completions on passes from fellow Westsyde Secondary graduate Liam Connolly.

That performance brought Meikle closer to breaking another one of Busby’s records – 3,109 receiving yards. Meikle needs 259 yards receiving to take over No. 1 spot.

“That one would be a stretch, that’s for sure,” Meikle said. “We like to air the ball out, for sure, but our run game is pretty strong. We’re a pretty balanced team.”

Meikle needs seven scoring receptions to become the CJFL’s all-time leader in touchdown catches.

The record holder, Jeff Schieman, has at least two things in common with Meikle – he played for the Sun and he’s a Westsyde graduate.

“I’ve met him a few times here and there, just being in Westsyde,” Meikle said. “That would be a pretty cool one to get. That’s also a stretch, but you never really know what will happen.”

Meikle said he has great memories from his five-year tenure with the Broncos, who entered into a rebuilding phase following the winless 2025 campaign.

“Bittersweet move away,” Meikle said. “Growing up in Kamloops, being from Kamloops, it’s been a great ride with the Broncos, but just with schooling especially, I wanted to get a start on it and it wasn’t available in Kamloops until 2027. As well, this year and next year are pretty crucial to making that next-level jump.”

Kamloops is 0-7 this season, with 37 points for and 431 points against, while Okanagan is 6-2 and second in league standings.

Meikle, who is training to be a heavy-duty mechanic at Okanagan College, is aiming to crack the Lions’ roster next year.

At the moment, his backup plan is to return to the Sun if professional football is not in the cards for 2027.

The Lions moved Meikle to fullback this spring during the CFL club’s training camp in Kamloops.

“With the Sun, they’ve put me in a role that’s a kind of hybrid between fullback and receiver,” Meikle said. “I’ve been doing lots of blocking and getting in the trenches, so it’s been good to get a little more experience at the junior level before making that jump.”

Meikle, with 193 receptions for 2,851 yards and 26 touchdowns in 56 regular-season contests, is nearing several BCFC records.

He is fourth in receiving yards, behind record-holder Matt Scheurwater (3,034 yards, Okanagan Sun, 2007 to 2010), second-place Brian Remming (2,887 yards, Surrey Rams, 1991 to 1995, BCJFA) and third-place Whitman Tomusiak (2,875, Vancouver Island Raiders, 2010 to 2013).

Meikle needs two catches to become the all-time leader in receptions. Derek Yachison, who played for the Broncos from 2011 to 2015, is atop the list with 194 grabs.

Five players are ahead of Meikle on the all-time BCFC touchdowns list: Schieman (32), Remming (31), Mark McDonald (Vancouver Meralomas (31, Vancouver Meralomas, 1968 to 1971, Big Four Football), Tomusiak (30), Michael Schaper (29, Raiders, 2008 to 2012) and Yachison (27).

Meikle received special CJFL exemption to play with the Broncos in his Grade 11 and Grade 12 campaigns.
