After decade of contemplation, Winston joins Kamloops mayoral race

While noting the importance of tackling issues around street disorder and affordability, Winston stated his greatest strength will come from building consensus.

“Nothing is possible – especially in the way the political system works if you can’t operate as a team – nothing works,” said Winston. “I believe in team – that is my priority – and then decisions. I believe operating out of integrity, truth, love and respect for people.”

As a building designer himself, Winston was happy to see projects like Build Kamloops proceed, but said he’d look for better balance in the future.

“If we haven’t tackled the base issues of making lives in Kamloops work, I don’t know if we have the responsibility to starting building other stuff,” added Winston. “And on the flip side of that same coin, what is going to make Kamloops awesome? What is going to make it a place people want to move to, invest in, everything? I don’t think there is a clear right answer there.”

Providing a different option is key to his choice to run.

“I’m astounded by how few people vote. These are people who are not voting, perhaps, because they don’t see themselves reflected (on the ballot). They don’t see themselves as the average person that they are going to make a difference, or they don’t connect with people who are available to vote for,” said Winston.

Election day in Kamloops is October 17.
