WolfPack soccer teams earn pair of road victories over Timberwolves

PRINCE GEORGE — It was a victorious Friday (Sept. 4) night in Northern B.C. for the Thompson Rivers University (TRU) WolfPack soccer program.

The WolfPack women’s soccer team earned a win in their first match of the 2026 Canada West season, shutting out the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) Timberwolves in Prince George 1-0.

Hannah Saxon, a first-year defender from Auckland, New Zealand, scored the go-ahead goal in her WolfPack debut. Goalkeeper Floor Ursem made nine saves for the clean sheet.

“It was a tough game,” Mark Pennington, WolfPack women’s soccer head coach says. “This is a tough place to play, and UNBC is always a well-organized team. This might be the best I’ve seen UNBC in a while, and we had to really work hard and grind today.

“It was more of a workmanlike effort than it was a beautiful, flowing performance but that’s part of our identity and we showed that we have style of game in our quiver as well.”

Meantime, the WolfPack men’s soccer team improved to 3-0 to start the Canada West season. Despite trailing 1-0 17 minutes in, TRU scored two unanswered goals to earn a 2-1 win over UNBC in Prince George.

Second-year defender James Rainbird scored the equalizing goal while fourth-year striker Kaelin Nguyen scored his second of the season to put TRU up for good.

“Once again defensively I thought we were good, our goalkeeping was solid again and it was just a good battle,” John Antulov, WolfPack men’s soccer head coach says. “They put the pressure on late, so it was good for us to once again be stout defensively, make good decisions and it’s really great to see how resilient we were.”

Both WolfPack soccer teams remain on the road to take on the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat in Kelowna Sunday (Sept. 6). The women kick off at noon while the men play at 2:45 p.m.
