Semi-truck destroys trailer in Highway 1 crash east of Sicamous; no serious injuries reported

SICAMOUS, B.C. — Police in Sicamous say it’s extremely fortunate there were no deaths or serious injuries stemming from a chaotic crash on the Trans-Canada Highway. 

Sicamous RCMP responded to a four-lane stretch of Highway 1 west of Malakwa just after 4:00 p.m. Tuesday (Sept. 1) where a large fifth wheel trailer was destroyed and torn open on the roadway’s shoulder. A pickup truck towing the trailer was also heavily damaged. 

In a news release issued Wednesday (Sept. 2), RCMP say a westbound semi-truck veered off the highway and struck the pickup truck and trailer. The truck parked on the shoulder of the highway due to a mechanical failure. 

“Police confirmed alcohol was not a factor in the collision,” RCMP state. “However, inattentive driving on behalf of the semi driver is suspected.”
