‘A vision got created in 1998’; Final Lorne Street lot set for development

KAMLOOPS — The final piece of Lorne Street, west of the former Red Bridge site, is now set for development, after council passed a housing agreement tax exemption on Tuesday (Sept. 1).

The purpose-built rental building will include 98 units, ranging from studio to two-bedrooms, with commercial space on the ground floor. The property will receive a 100 per cent tax exemption for increased assessed value for the next ten years under council’s Rental Revitalization Tax Exemption area.

“This is the last building in that area (of) Lorne Street. A vision got created in 1998, which is when the first building opened there after Sandman Centre opened,” said Councillor Mike O’Reilly. “I think when we sit in the chair here today and talk of planning and the vision of what Kamloops is going to be, council back in the… early ’90s came up with the vision of what that could be and now it’s finally coming to completion nearly 30 years later.”

The final property beside the former Red Bridge entrance is being held for possible widening of the replacement bridge’s right of way.

With Kamloops using tax exemptions throughout a number of neighbourhoods with the hopes of spurring development, council is hoping for more clarity around tax season as projects begin to return to the tax base.

“We can arrange to bring a report early in the fall, probably September timeframe, October timeframe, in conjunction with budgeting, just to get a sense in terms of predictability what we are seeing in that area related to growth,” added Director of Corporate Service David Hallinan.
