Kamloops Search and Rescue save pair of stranded hikers

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops Search and Rescue assisted a pair of hikers who became stranded at the Mt. Savona Caves on Friday night (Aug. 28).

KSAR officials said RCMP called the team and they deployed nine members with rope rescue equipment and a stretcher.

The two hikers went into the caves on Friday afternoon, but one became dizzy and distressed during their descent, leaving them unable to continue safely.

When the KSAR team team reached the hikers, they were cold and dealing with muscle cramps.

KSAR officials say members provided the hikers with food and warm clothing while working on a plan to get them out.

The team called in a North Shore Search And Rescue Talon helicopter for assistance.

“Equipped with night vision capabilities and a winch, the helicopter was able to safely winch extricate both subjects from the cliffside to a farmer’s field below,” said KSAR officials.

“Meanwhile, KSAR members established handlines to safely descend from the caves and remained prepared to stay overnight with the pair if helicopter extraction wasn’t possible.”

KSAR officials said it was a tough spot, but the two hikers were taken to safety.

“A challenging night that required teamwork, technical skills and coordination between multiple agencies. We’re happy to report that both subjects were brought out safely.”
