Richard Kelly Announces ‘Donnie Darko’ Sequel Book As First Step Toward Film Franchise

Filmmaker Richard Kelly is releasing an approximately 800-page book sequel to his 2001 cult classic Donnie Darko, titled The Philosophy Of Time Travel, set for later this year. The story takes place in the 14 months following Donnie’s death, written in found-documents style alternating between his parents’ perspectives. Kelly spent over 10 years writing the novel and more than two decades developing a sequel. He envisions the book as the launch pad for multiple films — first an animated adaptation, then a live-action project jumping 28 years into the future. “I love my cast,” Kelly told Variety. “I would love to reunite with all these wonderful actors.” The book is now available for preorder.
