100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. — The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) has given the “all clear” for residents in multiple areas around the massive French Bar Creek wildfire.

During the 9:00 a.m. hour Wednesday (Aug. 26), the CRD lifted the evacuation alert for French Bar Fire Areas 2, 3 and 5 near Dog Creek.

“An evacuation alert or order may need to be reissued if it is deemed necessary,” the CRD states. “Residents must be prepared if the area receives a future evacuation order or alert on short notice. Residents are advised to ensure they maintain their emergency kits.”

However, residents in properties outlined in red on the attached map remain on evacuation order while those in yellow are under evacuation alert.

Additionally, Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation downgraded an evacuation order for Cooper Johnny Meadow 8 IR and Toby Lake 6 IR to an evacuation alert.

In an update Wednesday morning, the BC Wildfire Service says the French Bar Creek wildfire is measured at around 61,539.51 hectares in size. The service says fire behaviour increased on the south flank Tuesday, and similar conditions are expected Wednesday as the fire burns on steep slopes and in mountainous terrain.

“An incoming system is expected to bring cooler and more humid conditions tomorrow but could cause stronger gusts this evening, as it moves into the area,” the wildfire service states. “We continue to prioritize values protection on this incident. A structure protection crew has assessed and deployed apparatus on the south flank and will test and maintain these systems to ensure they function properly if activation becomes necessary.

“For that equipment to be effective when it is needed, the public is urged not to tamper with or relocate it.”

There are 28 helicopters, 11 structure protection personnel and an incident management team assigned to the French Bar Creek wildfire.
