“Frontline officers attended the scene of the incident and have seized the motorized scooter for further investigation,” Shoihet said in the statement. “A helmet was not located, suggesting he may not have been wearing one at the time.”

Shoihet added people who witnessed the incident but have not yet spoken to police should contact the Kamloops RCMP Detachment at 250-828-3000 and cite file 2026-27084. 

Victim identified online

While police did not release an identity, a post on social media as well as a memorial at the scene, identified the victim as Hunter Dennis, who also went by the nickname Bannock.

“For those who had the privilege of knowing Hunter and sharing in his journey, you know the beautiful soul he was,” Sonja Thomson said of her son on Facebook. “Hunter carried such a kind and generous heart, and his presence touched the lives of so many in ways that will never be forgotten.”

“There are no words that can truly express the depth of the pain we feel in losing our precious son. Our hearts are shattered, and we will forever wish for more time, more moments, more memories with him.”

A separate Change.org petition, which also identified Dennis as the victim, is calling on the City of Kamloops to withdraw from the Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project immediately to prevent future tragedies.

Petition creator Luke Grigg alleges the use of e-scooters “compromises public safety.”

“E-scooters, while touted as convenient and eco-friendly, have shown to be a significant safety hazard,” Grigg wrote. “Reports across North America highlight a worrying surge in accidents involving e-scooters, with injuries ranging from minor scrapes to severe trauma and, tragically, fatalities.”

“In cities with less stringent regulations, we see an uptick in accidents both for riders and pedestrians. Kamloops is no exception.”

“Now is the time for us to stand together and advocate for a safer city,” Grigg added in the petition, which had 722 signatures as of publishing. “Hunter’s memory should inspire us to create a community where such accidents are preventable rather than inevitable.”
