Salmon Arm RCMP arrest wildland arson suspect

SALMON ARM, B.C. — Salmon Arm RCMP have arrested a suspect who is believed to have deliberately set a brush fire over the weekend.

Police officials said officers responded to a report of a fire on the 300-block Trans Canada Highway Southwest shortly before 6 p.m. on Saturday (August 8).

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found brush engulfed in flames, threatening a nearby business.

Police and members of the public worked to contain the flames until it was extinguished, with damage limited to nearby bushes and trees. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Salmon Arm RCMP said the investigation revealed that the fire appeared to have been set intentionally and officers identified someone they believed to be responsible.

The suspect was found and arrested without incident on Sunday (August 9).

“Thanks to the quick actions of responding officers and community members, the fire was extinguished before it could spread to nearby buildings,” said Staff Sergeant Simon Scott of the Salmon Arm RCMP.

“The investigation remains ongoing and we continue to seek additional witnesses.”
